Gum Grafting After Care
It is important to follow specific care instructions to enhance the success of your surgical procedure.
-
It is Imperative that you minimise the amount of movement exerted to the grafted area for the first 3 days after your procedure and continue to be careful for 10 days after your procedure.
-
During the first 3 day period, you MUST avoid touching the grafted area. Avoid cheek pulling, avoid hard foods (foods that cannot be cut with a plastic knife cannot be consumed), avoid vigorous mouth washing or even toothbrushing around the area (until advised otherwise).
-
After 24 hours, use Chlorhexidine based mouthwash or warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in half a glass of warm water) to rinse after eating or 2-3 times a day. When you mouth rinse,, do not rinse vigorously. Instead, simply head tilt with the mouthwash in place and hold for 30 seconds before spitting.
-
Avoid vigorous exercise or excessive alcohol for 24 hours as these can cause bleeding.
-
Refrain from smoking. You will benefit greatly from nicotine patches or substitutes for one week prior and three weeks post operatively.
-
Avoid food and drinks that are too hot or too cold for 10 days after your procedure. Ensure your food is of room temperature.
-
Do not use manual or electric toothbrush in the surgical area until directed by your doctor.
-
You will be reviewed at days 3 and 10 after your procedure. If you have any questions, please reach us via the chatbot.
